This toxic fallout contained extreme levels of asbestos, lead, dioxins, and benzene.

The Exposure Zone

Researchers from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai found that thousands of people have been diagnosed with or died from cancers or respiratory illnesses related to the 9/11 attack.

A long-term study also found that law enforcement officers in New York City have 50% more cancer diagnoses after 9/11 than they did before the attack.

9/11 Caused Cancer in Many

The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund was set up in 2001 for those who suffered illness and injury as well as those who lost family during the terrorist attack.

As people continued to become sick long after the attacks, the fund was extended by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, signed into law in 2011.

The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund

The Zadroga Act also established the World Trade Center Health Program, which specifically treats illnesses and conditions associated with the exposure to the 9/11 attack.

In 2019, the Never Forget the Heroes Act extended the fund until 2090.
